MEET THE INNOVATIVE WOMEN OF EDISON.
MEET CAROLYN SIMS, SENIOR ADVISOR – POLICY ENGAGEMENT
Carolyn Sims is a Senior Advisor on the Government Relations team at Southern California Edison (SCE). In this role, she is responsible for leading both internal and external engagements with SCE’s community partners. She represents the Policy Engagement team in the development and delivery of strategies and tactics on major company policy issues and strategies. Specifically, she is responsible for leading the external engagement strategies for environmentally impacted and low income communities, as well as managing relationships with participants of the Clean Energy Access Working Group.
Carolyn is a passionate advocate for women’s empowerment and leadership, earning a reputation as a master connector for having helped make connections for hundreds of women based on their professional interests.
When asked what was the most meaningful part of working at SCE, Carolyn said, “The most meaningful part about working at SCE is that I can navigate in my passion for partnering with internal and external stakeholders as part of my role within policy engagement.”
She continued, “I have over 25 years of experience in human resources, and this has been an asset in my current position in which I partner with internal and external stakeholders. Being able to take strategic thinking and apply it to building working partnerships with these stakeholders while identifying new opportunities for collaboration in support of meeting their goals is very rewarding. My colleagues refer to me as ‘The Connector.’ Internally, I serve as a mentor, thought partner, and connect employees to their passion. I’ve served as the president of two of SCE’s employee resource groups and currently serve as an advisor to the African American resource group. Externally, I develop partnerships with our environmentally impacted communities. These communities are disproportionately affected by environmental or socioeconomic burdens.”
Carolyn currently serves on the board of directors for the Bloom Again Foundation, which assists women with rapid response grants to help bridge the gap in their living expenses when they experience a medical situation. She is also on the executive committee of Sweet, a women’s networking group that fosters executive level relationships among women for business development, collaboration, and expanded career paths. Carolyn believes in paying it forward and giving back whenever she can, supporting women battling cancer and the homeless, as well as mentoring young women to achieve their full potential. At SCE, Carolyn was previously the president of the company’s African American Employee Resource Group, The Networkers, and the Women’s Roundtable. She is also a 2018 recipient of the J.K. Horton Humanitarian Award, a distinction given to employees of SCE for exemplary acts of citizenship or service under emergency conditions. Carolyn earned a Master of Science in Human Resources and a Bachelor of Science in Human Relations and Business from Amberton University. She is a mom to three adult daughters, Cashawn, Christol, and Carynn, and has been happily married to her husband Shawn for over 29 years.
